On Island Time

July 5th, 2014 - On Island Time

Stairway to Paradise
I have often been asked, "What is it that you guys do at the beach?" This is, I suppose, a fairly innocent question. My response is short and sweet ... "not much". The truth is, we visit Abaco for vacation. And yes, there is plenty to do in the islands. But my guess is that we are "less busy" than many who boat from island to island for the duration of their trip. That's intentional, by the way. Check out this time lapse video of some of our morning on North Beach today. Yep, you get the idea.

By the way, that sea glass I have referred to often in this blog? There is so much at North Beach that we have to bring several ziplock bags to store the glass in. We are excited about taking some back with us and making some jewelry, ornaments, etc. Green is easy to find. Blue and clear, not so much. Today we brought some "equipment" to help with the excavation process: two colanders from the kitchen of our rental house. They worked quite well!

After enjoying "our" beach for a few hours, we made our way to Hope Town Harbour Lodge for lunch and afternoon fun. Quite honestly, it took a long time to receive the food we ordered. When the food arrived it was delicious. Speaking of food, does the beach make anyone else hungry? It just seems as though food at the beach is just better; more filling. After lunch, we lounged at the pool, ordered the obligatory mudslide from Gary, and ... taught my 5 year old daughter how to swim in 10 minutes! All in a day's work. The Hope Town Harbour Lodge is located just south of the settlement, an easy walk from the post office/ "down town" area. The pool area is a magnificent place to kick back and relax as a cool breeze rustles through the coconut and palm trees. The beach in front of HTHL is beautiful as well. Another favorite spot on the island that you must visit! Abby would highly recommend the ice cream.

After our fun-filled day, we decided to hang close to home for the evening. Mom's baked spaghetti was superb. Cookies from LVA hit the spot for dessert. Today, we were discussing how much we love this place and an interesting observation was recorded. This is one of the few places I have visited on this earth where I don't know what time it is, and I quickly lose track of what day it is. It just does not matter, it's of no importance or consequence to me. That's yet another reason this island so special and ingrained in our hearts forever. Island time means it is whatever time you want it to be. Relax, I tell myself, we're on island time.

Deep Thoughts (Not Really):
  • Games of choice each evening: Rummikub, Scrabble, Phase 10. Share what you like to play.
  • A huge "thank you" to the waitress at the HTHL who provided free fries for my daughter while waiting for our order to arrive. Nice touch.
  • Rule of thumb, give your glasses and/or camera lenses a few minutes to "defog" when stepping outside from an airconditioned room.
  • Bug spray is a must on the island. The insects don't bother me much, but they like the taste of a few others in our group.
  • Speaking of bugs, sprinkle hot sauce around your plate and table when eating outside on Elbow Cay. Helps keep them away!
