The Night Sky

July 3rd, 2014 - Junkanoo

Pano of White Sound
Pano of Hope Town Harbour
Pano of North Beach on Elbow Cay

We were greeted this morning with hot and humid conditions on the island and, most importantly, abundant sunshine. After breakfast, we made our way to North Beach for several hours before heading back in for some lunch. We found scores of sea glass near high tide and collected several bags full that we intend to use for some DIY projects when we get back to the upstate. Just as we loaded up in the golf cart to head back home, it "came up a bad cloud" and rained for a couple of hours before clearing off once again.

For supper, we made our way to Cap'n Jacks for supper and trivia night. Rainbow enjoyed coconut shrimp while Trace ordered his customary cheeseburger. I enjoyed shrimp for my meal, though I would have hoped for more than 5 shrimp considering the $17.75 price tag. Heck, it was worth it just to participate in trivia night. Two years ago, we won the event. Tonight, our team "The Loyalists", tied for first place and even won the free drinks round of competition. The streets of Hope Town and Cap'n Jacks were not as crowded tonight due, at least in part, to the regatta beginning soon and the Stranded Naked party over on Fiddle Cay.

After supper, we made our way to Munchies once again for ice cream before heading south to Sea Spray to take in their Junkanoo/Goombay Festival. You can ask folks from all the various cays and get a different explanation as to what Junkanoo is all about. At Sea Spray, it's all about having fun and partying. We watched the parade, talked to some friends we had met on the island, and enjoyed some festive music. On the ride back to our house, we looked up. Yes, the night sky on Elbow Cay is something to behold. I have never seen so many stars visible with the naked eye. You truly get a sense of how we came up with the term "milky way" as you stare up to the heavens and admire the view. As beautiful as this island can be during the day, there is true beauty to be found in those evening hours as those celestial beings in the sky light your path.
