Don't Worry About the Flies

We "done reach" as they say around here. One inevitable truth about traveling to the Abaco islands is that the travel won't be easy. Abaco is not for sissies, after all. We left our house in upstate South Carolina at 5:00 A.M. and boarded our first plane for a 7:00 A.M. flight from GSP to Atlanta. Once we touched down in ATL, we quickly made our way to the next gate (with 2 minutes to spare) to catch our bird from ATL to West Palm Beach. From PBI, we had to grab our luggage, check in through Bahamas Air before boarding our customary flight 282 from PBI to MHH (Marsh Harbour). Luckily, the only delay we experienced was about 20 minutes or so in West Palm Beach. As the regulars already know, arriving in MHH is just the beginning. There is still customs and immigration to pass through before finding a taxi and making it to the Albury Ferry stop. The 20 minute ferry ride is beautiful and we always seem to run into someone on the ferry with a connection to our area. This time, two gentlemen from Clinton and Florence, South Carolina. Our care taker met us at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge dock and we drove in the back of his pick up to our house here on the island. Thunder boomed in the background for a portion of the afternoon as we unpacked, but we never experienced heavy rain. After quick trips to the Food Store and LVA, we continued our tradition of dinner at On' Da Beach. A mudslide or two may have been in order. Their mahi mahi and barbecue chicken sandwiches sure hit the spot after a long day of travel. I estimated that our party brought with them 500 pounds of checked luggage and carry-ons. We finished the evening with a golf cart ride to Tahiti Beach (south) and to the settlement gates (north). This is a trick we learned with little ones and one that worked again for our 2 1/2 year old son, Grayson. He was out like a light in no time. We were in bed before 9 P.M. and ready for our next adventure.

Why My Back Hurts

Moore Musings:
As we finally sat down at On Da Beach Bar and Grill yesterday evening, flies attacked our food. I suppose it is human nature to complain. Complain about the flies, the luggage, the travel. However, our time on the island and vacationing in paradise together has taught us to not be so worried about the flies. Go with the flow. Enjoy the moment. Take it all in. There will be plenty with which to be concerned when we go back home. No, we chose not to complain, but rather to rejoice in the fact that we are allowed another day to experience this special place. It should be our prayer that we take this attitude with us to South Carolina.

Final Thoughts:
  • It is certainly crowded on Elbow Cay. Perhaps the most crowded we have seen it.
  • Couple that with houses going up left and right and the secret might be out. I am excited for our Bahamian friend, but do remain concerned about "overcrowding" on such a small island. I suppose I am selfish.
  • It is easy to drop some money on the island. As we were grocery shopping, I noticed a bag of potato chips for $7.50. Wow!
  • We are impressed thus far with Getaway Cart Rentals. Friendly and timely service.
